Many societies aligned their ritual sites and structures on a west-to-east axis: Mayan pyramids, Vedic altars, Anglo-Saxon burials, and Christian churches and cathedrals, among many others. Especially significant is the orientation of churches in which generally one enters from the west facing an altar to the east.
